Alex is the middle child of Phil and Claire Dunphy, and the sister of Haley and Luke. Alex is an anomaly in the family purely based on her intellect and intelligence. She's very motivated academically and often seems genuinely stunned that the people around her are related to her. She often seems to be observing the actions of her family as an outsider who is simply taking in a show. But Alex gets great joy out of messing with both her older sister Haley and her younger brother Luke. She is extremely sharp-witted and an expert at trading barbs, especially with Haley.Alex is a bit of a social misfit, having once cried to her parents that she has no friends. She seems to secretly admire some of Haley's social prowess, but would never admit it. Alex eventually finds her niche, especially among the somewhat nerdy crowd, and seems perfectly content with this status. She tells Haley, You have your fans, I have mine; someday your fans are going to work for my fans. Ambitious in most every way, Alex practices the cello -- having chosen it over the violin because cellists are more sought after by university orchestras -- and plays lacrosse. Show less «
